Laika, a symbol of rebirth.
Mattia Giacomelli, winemaker at Santa Tresa, shares the story of Laika
It was the autumn of 2018, during the heart of the harvest at Santa Tresa. Amidst the golden rows and the air filled with the scent of ripe grapes, two little dogs had made the vineyard their home. Laika, lively and affectionate, and her companion, a sweet stray with a tawny coat, had won everyone’s hearts. They followed the workers everywhere, wagging their tails among the clusters and, in their own way, joining the bustling activity of the harvest.
Laika's first days at Santa Tresa
It almost felt as if they were part of the “Santa Tresa team,” always ready to add a touch of lightness to our days. I had grown particularly fond of Laika, with her intelligent gaze and her way of approaching without ever being intrusive.

Then something terrible happened. One day, without us noticing, both of them were poisoned. I still don’t know who did it or why. When we found them, they were lying there, motionless and in pain. We did everything possible to save them, but only Laika survived. It was a devastating blow. At that point, I couldn’t leave her free in such a dangerous area. When the harvest ended, I decided to take her with me, to entrust her to my parents, knowing she would find a safe haven, plenty of love, and a large field where she could run freely and happily.

Since then, Laika has become part of our family. Now she lives happily in the mountains, running through the meadows and basking in the sun.

Every time I visit her, she greets me with the same enthusiasm as those days at Santa Tresa, and her wagging tail reminds me that, even in the darkest moments, there’s always room for a new beginning.
