Ronny, the King of Vigolana.
Mattia Giacomelli, winemaker at Santa Tresa, shares the story of Ronny
It was the harvest of 2020, a year that would remain etched in my memory, for Santa Tresa, and for the whole world. In the warm countryside of Vittoria, amidst the excitement of grape picking, a small furry miracle wandered about, lost and confused.
One morning, I came across a tiny ball of fur. He was there, alone and hungry, on the edge of the winery. He couldn’t have been more than three months old, far too young to face the world on his own. There was no sign of his mother or siblings; he had been left behind. I couldn’t ignore him. The countryside, with its dangers and stray animals, was no place for such a helpless little kitten.

So, I decided to take him in and give him shelter. Throughout the entire harvest season, the kitten, whom I named Ronny, lived safely in my flat next to the winery, where I was staying to oversee every detail of the winemaking process during this critical time for our wines. Day by day, Ronny found his way into my heart. He was no longer just a puppy I’d stumbled upon by chance; he had become a part of my routine, a quiet companion amidst the hustle and bustle, the calm presence that greeted me each evening after work.

When the harvest ended, I couldn’t imagine leaving him behind. So, I took him with me to Trentino, where Ronny found a new home, with me and Martina.

Today, Ronny reigns over the Altopiano della Vigolana. With his energy and lively eyes, he charms everyone he meets.

His story, born among the sunlit vineyards of Sicily and carried to the mountains of Trentino, is a testament to how an unexpected encounter can blossom into a beautiful friendship destined to last forever.
